How to turn your documents into a podcast
Published 2026-07-19
Turning documents into a podcast means converting the things you mean to read — PDFs, EPUBs, papers, notes — into audio episodes that arrive in a private RSS feed, so your podcast app treats them like any other show. Here is how it works, what it's good for, and where the approach beats a read-aloud app or a one-off text-to-speech converter.
From document to episode
- Upload PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, or Markdown, or paste text. For PDFs, check the text-layer and file requirements. Image-only scans need OCR elsewhere first.
- Review the extracted text, choose a voice, and check the listening estimate. Confirm generation; processing time depends on document length and the queue.
- Listen in the browser or add your private RSS URL to a compatible player. Ready documents appear as episodes when feed visibility is enabled. MP3 download is available on Listener and Pro.
Choose your player
Players that accept private RSS URLs include Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, and AntennaPod. Copy the URL from your Feed page and use the player’s add-by-URL option. Offline listening, sleep timers, and device synchronization depend on the app you choose. Spotify does not accept arbitrary external RSS feeds.
Keep the link private
Anyone holding the feed URL can listen. Regenerate it if exposed: future requests to the old feed and audio addresses stop working. This cannot remove copies already downloaded by a player. ReadCastX does not submit private feeds to public directories.
Narration runs on infrastructure operated in France without sending your text to a third-party narration API or training models on it. Your player receives audio wherever you listen. Read the data-handling details and deletion limits.
Start with the Free plan
Free includes 3 generated audio hours per month and the three newest feed episodes. Listener and Pro add MP3 downloads and a full-library feed. Playback does not use generation hours. Check current plans before deciding.
Can I turn a PDF into a podcast episode?
Yes, when the PDF has selectable text. Upload it, review the extraction and listening estimate, then confirm narration. Ready documents appear in your private feed when feed visibility is enabled. The Free feed includes the three newest episodes.
How long does a document take to listen to?
Duration depends on text length, voice, and speed. ReadCastX shows an estimate before you confirm narration. The allowance measures generated audio hours; playback does not consume generation hours.
Which podcast apps work with a private document feed?
Use a player that accepts private RSS URLs, such as Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, or AntennaPod. Features and synchronization depend on the player. Spotify does not accept arbitrary external RSS feed URLs.
Is this different from a read-aloud app?
A feed delivers reusable audio episodes to a compatible podcast player. Reader apps have different combinations of highlighting, offline playback, background listening, and export. Choose the workflow that suits you.
